This page contains photos of most of the species of wood we carry.

 

Black Walnut

Dark rich brown, sapwood white. Durable, strong, hard, close-grained. Takes a good polish.

This wood comes from our source in Ohio.

Hickory

Light brown, close-grained, heavy, hard, tough, strong and flexible. Member of the Walnut family.

This wood comes from our source in Ohio.

Honey Locust

Brown to reddish, coarse-grained, tools well.

The source for this wood is local, although, it is also available from our source in Ohio.

Live Oak

Brown to light borwn, close-grained, tough, hard, strong, heavy. Difficult to work.

The source of this wood is local. We cut the trees and had the logs milled.

Magnolia

Creamy white sometimes with gray inclusions, hard, fairly heavy. It seems to work about like Maple, but is not as durable as Maple. Takes a nice finish.

Osage Orange

Bright orange or yellow, heavy, hard, durable, strong. This species was named Bois d'Arc (bow-wood) by folks from a certain un-named European country. (We don't use that word for now.) The Osage Indians used it to make bows.

This wood comes from our source in Ohio, although, it is also available locally.

Pecan

Reddish brown, coarse-grained, heavy, hard, brittle. Pecan is a member of the Walnut family, but is not as strong as other family members.

Sassafras

White with a greenish cast or orange colored, aromatic, durable, close-grained, brittle. The bark from the roots of the tree are used to make sassafras tea, the leaves are used to make Gumbo File'.

Water Oak

Light brown, heavy, hard, strong, straighter grained than Live Oak. Easier to work.

The source for this wood is local. We cut the trees and had the logs milled.

Wild Cherry

Rich, reddish brown, heavy, moderately hard, strong, works well, finishes smoothly. Takes a beautiful polish.
